"Using a camshaft is like playing a piano with a broom":

Koenigsegg has been developing this for a few years. I think there was a thread on it awhile back, and it's groundbreaking stuff. It also is the future of the internal combustion engine, if the internal combustion engine is to have a future. I hope so.

Imagine having full control over valve timing, valve lift, duration and overlap. You could have several different tunes that would give the engine radically different performance parameters. You'll need a lot of computing power to run the system, but you can do anything with it, from extracting incredible fuel economy to creating monster power.

With 48 volt systems becoming more common, you wonder if solenoids wouldn't be easier/cheaper to actuate valves. Must not be, though, because Koenigsegg is a very smart man.
